Inheritances in Bankruptcy and Homeowner Liability at Halloween

David Adams Oct. 31, 2017

Bankruptcy

Death is inevitable, but receiving an inheritance is rare. Unfortunately, an inheritance can be lost to the bankruptcy court, if the relative dies within 6 months of the date bankruptcy was filed.  If so, the inheritance would be considered part of the bankruptcy estate and subject to turnover up to the total amount of all debts.

Personal Injury

Homeowners or renters insurance will cover most negligence claims for personal injuries on one's property.  While scaring the neighbor kids can be great fun, there could be liability if an injury occurs, especially if there was some dangerous condition on the property, or there was inadequate lighting.  Happy trick or treating!
