Personal Injury - a ten-year study in Spain established that the incidence of car crashes increases by 3-7% during heat waves (yeah, weird, huh?) Most of the increased risk is placed on driver performance factors (driver error, fatigue, sleepiness, etc), not on vehicle performance issues.

Bankruptcy - if a homeowner finances a new air conditioner unit, it becomes a fixture to the property after installation. If a bankruptcy is later filed, chances are fairly strong that the a/c debt will be discharged in the bankruptcy. Only if the creditor goes to the trouble to file the loan as a mortgage on the property would there be trouble.
